How to get better at physics without memorising formulas

Physics study tips: how to read a problem, draw the situation, and use units to catch your own mistakes before the teacher does.

Always draw the situation first

Before touching a formula, draw the object, mark every force with an arrow, and write down what is known and what is asked. Half of all physics mistakes are made before any calculation, in the translation from text to picture.

Let the units do the checking

Carry units through every step. If your answer for a speed comes out in kg·m, the error is upstream and you can find it in seconds instead of redoing the whole problem.

Also sanity-check magnitude: a falling stone does not reach 4000 m/s, and a household appliance does not draw 500 A.

Learn the five core ideas, derive the rest

Newton's laws, conservation of energy, conservation of momentum, the definition of work, and the ideal gas relation cover most of upper-secondary physics. Nearly every formula in the book follows from them.

Practise deriving a formula you already know from one of these. It takes two minutes and makes the formula sheet feel like a shortcut instead of a wall of symbols.
